One of the key objectives of the project is mainstreaming multi-stakeholder participation in government-led conservation activities to promote local ownership and community stewardship in the long term. Towards this, a Participatory Bird Ringing and Monitoring Programme has been conducted in the Changthang landscape for the past two years with participation from the State Wildlife Protection Department, enthusiastic local students of the natural sciences, local NGOs, members of the local community of Changthang, and SECURE Himalaya state team.
The nine-day long program, conducted by experts from Bombay Natural History Society, comprises introductory sessions, orientation and theoretical training for the trainees spanning the first three days, followed by extensive field based engagements and application of classroom sessions in select biodiversity hotspots throughout the project landscape. This activity has now been institutionalized in the Department of Wildlife Protection, Ladakh, to be held each year.
